Having joined the team at Pleydell Smithyman a couple of years ago, one of the things that has struck me most is the depth of knowledge and experience that exists within the business, particularly when it comes to the garden centre and farm shop sector.

Over the past two years, I have had the opportunity to work alongside colleagues who have spent decades supporting rural businesses through planning challenges, development opportunities and long-term growth strategies.  During that time, I have seen first-hand why specialist advice can make such a difference.

Garden centres and farm shops are unique businesses!

They are often family-owned, deeply connected to their local communities and constantly balancing commercial pressures with long-term ambitions.  No two sites are ever quite the same.  While planning policy provides the framework, understanding how a business actually operates is often just as important.

What has impressed me most about the Pleydell Smithyman approach is that planning is never considered in isolation.  Conversations rarely begin with policy documents or planning constraints.  Instead, they start with understanding the business itself.  What are the owners trying to achieve? What challenges are they facing? Where are the opportunities for growth? How can the site evolve to meet changing customer expectations?

That approach reflects something I have seen in everything we do since joining the business: our core values are not simply statements on a website.  It is solution focused!

Passion, Empathy, Solution Focus and Partnership genuinely shape the way the team works with clients every day.

There is a real passion for helping businesses succeed.  Many of the clients we work with have invested years, sometimes generations, into building successful garden centres and farm shops.  That commitment is often matched by the team at Pleydell Smithyman, who bring enthusiasm and energy to every project, whether it is a small operational improvement or a major development proposal.

Empathy is equally important.  One of the things I have observed is the amount of time colleagues spend listening to clients and understanding their objectives before discussing solutions.  Every business has its own history, culture and challenges.  Taking the time to understand these factors helps ensure that recommendations are tailored to the individual business rather than being based on a standard formula.

This understanding is particularly important when considering development opportunities. The team combines planning expertise with commercial awareness, recognising that securing planning permission is only part of the process.  Any proposal must also make sense from an operational and financial perspective.  That solution-focused mindset helps create outcomes that are practical, deliverable and aligned with long-term business goals.

I have also seen first-hand the value of partnership. The strongest projects are often those where clients and consultants work closely together, sharing ideas, knowledge and experience. Rather than simply providing advice from a distance, the team becomes part of the journey, helping clients navigate challenges and identify opportunities as their businesses evolve.

Experience undoubtedly plays a significant role in this process. Pleydell Smithyman has spent more than 30 years working within the rural sector, and the planning team has achieved planning success in around 98% of cases.  While those figures are impressive, what stands out to me is the knowledge, care and approach to planning that sits behind them. The team understands the importance of working with the planners, how local authorities think, how planning policy is applied in practice and, crucially, how to present proposals in a way that demonstrates clear benefits for both the business and the wider community.  That expertise has been developed through decades of involvement with garden centres, farm shops and rural enterprises across the country.

The current economic climate has only reinforced the importance of specialist advice.  Business owners face increasing costs, changing consumer expectations and ongoing pressure to adapt.  In that environment, having advisers who understand both the planning landscape and the commercial realities of running a rural business can provide valuable clarity and confidence.

Looking back on my time with Pleydell Smithyman so far, it is clear to me that clients come to the business for more than planning advice alone.  They value a relationship built on understanding, reliability and a shared commitment to progress.

Ultimately, what I have seen over the past two years is a team that combines specialist knowledge with genuine care for its clients and their businesses.  In a sector where every decision can have long-term implications, that combination of experience, empathy and partnership continues to make a meaningful difference, and having a solution for every challenge, whatever that be, is essential.
