Project: Cooling Green and Pleasant

Client: Coolings

Pleydell Smithyman Limited designed and project managed the development of an innovative, asymmetric gluelam building for Cooling Nurseries, in Kent. The design and materials used reflected the client’s brief that the development should be environmentally friendly and ecological, with timber being carbon neutral.

Where possible, recycled and recyclable materials have been used and design features include the use of straw bale walls, solar heated water and wood-fired heating. Rainwater harvesting has been built into the development to provide water for plants and to flush the toilets. North facing windows ensure natural light is provided without solar gain and manual, natural ventilation is used as opposed to air conditioning. Cooling Green and Pleasant combines sustainability with style, with a range of design features including some of the most desirable toilets in the UK.
