Pleydell Smithyman Limited were commissioned by Dudley Canal Trust (Trips) Limited to develop a new visitor facility for their operation. Our brief involved extensive technical, financial and community understanding which helped realise the recently opened Learning & Access Hub - The Portal. The Hub forms an education and interpretation venue for the local community and visitors and will provide a sustainable and lasting legacy to ensure the long term viability of Dudley Canal. We were instrumental in developing the project from concept to build through partnership working with the community and stakeholders. This process included:

Developing the design of the hub from concept to build.
Obtaining planning permission for the project.
Leading the tendering process for the construction and catering contracts.
Community and stakeholder engagement and consultation.
Developing and implementing a funding strategy for the project.

The Portal will also enable the Dudley Canal Trust (Trips) Limited to secure the future of the Limestone Mines and Caverns, by increasing the revenue potential of the site with new catering and retail facilities.

This project illustrates our ability to take a project from inception to delivery. Our Funding Strategy and support has helped the Dudley Canal Trust (Trips) Limited secure £2.5 million in funding from a range of sources including the Heritage Lottery Fund, European Regional Development Fund, Biffa Award and Wolfson Foundation.

WEBBS OF WYCHBOLD

Webbs are one of the country’s foremost and award winning garden centres. Pleydell Smithyman have gained planning approvals, designed and delivered a phased improvement strategy over 15 years culminating in a 6000m² two storey retail extension including concessions and a 450 seat restaurant.

Our Interior Designer originated the interior layout for all sales areas, the coffee shop and restaurant through which we developed a marketing strategy for the diversification and expansion of the outlet. This project highlights our ability to develop strategies for commercial business growth, development and diversification of a major retail site.

SQUIRES BADSHOT LEA

Pleydell Smithyman Limited has worked in partnership with Squires Garden Centres group on a number of projects. Our work at Squires Badshot Lea Garden Centre involved leading a programme of site improvements including creating the company’s head office and the development of a stylish new restaurant.

We also took a creative and strategic approach using business forecasting, benchmarking and our knowledge of the industry to reinvigorate the shop fit, establish a new retail layout and enhance the outdoor sales area to maximise customer flow and add value.

LLANWERN FORMER STEELWORKS

LOCATION: LLANWERN, WALES | UNITED KINGDOM

Pleydell Smithyman Limited are part of a large multidisciplinary team who have been commissioned to provide advice, masterplanning, design, contract administration and maintenance expertise for a new housing development on the site of a former steelworks in South Wales.

The regeneration scheme forms part of planned development to provide a new neighbourhood with approximately 4,000 dwellings and includes a new local centre, business park, schools, large areas of new parks and lakes, landscape corridors between the development plots consisting of reenside walkways and greenways, cycle routes and play areas. The brownfield site is currently undergoing phased remediation of contaminated ground, and subsequent development of phased housing plots,

a large public park, a business park and local centre and associated infrastructure.

Pleydell Smithyman has been involved from the planning process, through to the design and implementation of the landscape works for the first phase of the scheme as well as in the production of the Sub Area Masterplan for the second phase of the development.

WYTHENSHAWE COMMERCIAL MASTERPLAN

Manchester City Council issued an invitation to tender to suitably experienced consultants for services in connection with the preparation of a Commercial Masterplan for Wythenshawe Park and Hall. Pleydell Smithyman Limited, supported by PRD and Chase Associates as part of their project team, were successful and awarded the contract which commenced in April 2023. The brief was comprehensive in its scope.

In summary it required the consultants to:

Understand the assets within the park.
Assess and analyse the current provision within the park.
Identify commercial opportunities.
Consider existing and potential infrastructure, assets, events, and activities.
Develop and overarching brand for the park.
Bring forward viable and relevant commercial opportunities.
Create and develop proposals, and a plan.
Celebrate the heritage and natural environments.
