Clifton Quarry Planning Success

Pleydell Smithyman Limited, on behalf of Tarmac Trading Limited, have secured planning permission for the phased extraction of approximately 2.2 million tonnes of sand and gravel and a new concrete batching plant at Clifton Quarry, Severn Stoke, Worcestershire. The approval will see the retention of local employment through the consolidation of the existing works and will make an important contribution towards the sustainable supply of sand and gravel in Worcestershire with Clifton Quarry supporting inward investment through local development projects for a further 11 years.

Pleydell Smithyman Limited was responsible for managing the project and the Environmental Impact Assessment carrying out the quarry design, planning, Landscape and Visual Impact Assessment and ecological impact assessment in-house. The scheme saw the best of collaborative and diligent working practices between the client, Pleydell Smithyman Limited, our various sub-consultants and Worcestershire County Council as the Minerals Planning Authority. This allowed for planning approval to be issued on the same day that the Planning and Regulatory Committee resolved to grant planning permission. Positive negotiations and attention to detail focused on fewer pre-commencement planning conditions which has allowed Tarmac to swiftly commence development on the southern extension.

Through the phased operations of the quarry the site will be progressively restored to a mix of agricultural land, nature conservation uses and lakes with the Pleydell Smithyman Limited team assisting the client with planning, design, landscape and ecological requirements as the quarry develops.
